So Fotofreo opened last week. Didn't really catch much of the openings, as I've been sick (still). However, saw the Hijacked opening briefly which was awesome, the book looks great. Got my new scanner on monday, the Epson v700. It is pretty fantastic, will save me loads of time & finally I can see the end of my Asia work - scanning them anyway. Today I went to Paulo Pellegrin's floortalk at the Maritime Museum which was very interesting & had lunch in Freo with the crew later on. Happy times & more to come soon.
The epson won't save my back-on-the-scooter focusing skills..

scanned a **%*load this week & printed some stuff which will hopefully go in an exhibit. no jinxing, no name. Even did some research for my project on roads & freedom. been looking at 4wds to go up north to wolfe creek/broome in a couple week's time to shoot more for it.

it's gonna be a good weekend too, air concert tomorrow, paul playing funk club on friday & Inele has release on her new line on Saturday. Hopefully I will be able to go to it all. Next week is the start of FotoFreo too, so gonna be lots of openings to go to & get smashed with friends & the unknown. See you soon.

Days are definitely picking up around here. De-enrolled myself from the major film production unit (5 films in 3 months..) and enrolled myself into a bi-weekly cinematography course instead. Dhaka #2 / Sleeping is for Dreamers

Time is now 2:30 AM Dhaka time, and I am waiting for sunlight. Trying to get the most out of the last days here. Visited a slaughterhouse this morning and saw goats converted to halal dinners. Slept during the day, did some shoeshopping (I am so past my 20kgs...) Now I've just returned from the same slaughterhouse, and seen buffalos slaughtered trying to get something stuck on film without being spraypainted in buffaloblood (halway successful). My new shoes are red anyway. In a couple of hours the sun will rise and I'm heading to the slums to see the people waking up. It has been a great ride, and monday I will be back to Australia with the family visiting until classes starts in the end of February. Sleeping is for dreamers.....

So internet isn't all that in Bangladesh, but all else is. I've had a jolly time so far, both in Dhaka and on photomission in the Sylhet region the last week. Met fantastic people and seen the weirdest things. This place is so untouched by the western world, which is something I never saw in southeast Asia before..Its all too much stuff to bother writing it all down (as always), but I can promise photos in February when I get back. I am up to around 70 rolls on my Asia trip now, 30 last week trying to act like a photo journalist without being able to communicate to anyone. Great times none the less.. I am back in Dhaka now, so might be able to write a bit more, maybe even upload a photo.....

Happy new year to everyone! It's been 2 strange weeks since last I posted, a lot of weird things have happened and Christmas was celebrated in a new way for me. I am in Jakarta now, which is enormous, polluted and filled with too many cars for the roads to handle. However, I've had good days walking around, talking to streetbums and bargaining for daggers. Saw I'm Not There, which was so perfect in some scenes, but overall a bit disappointing. Maybe a big screen would do it more justice than a hotel TV and a pirated DVD..Cate Blanchett was great anyways. Tomorrow marks the end of my Indonesian journey, it's been such a treat, and very productive photography-wise. Pretty weird spending a month in solitude, and it's gonna be great to meet old friends in Dhaka. That's all for now, I have so many stories, but my stomach says it's time to leave. Later.

I feel so empty. My friend Silje passed away last night from a short, but hard period with cancer. My thoughts go out to her family and boyfriend. Silje was a light shining brightly, put out way too soon. The darkness seems impenetrable. I am sinking. May you rest in peace Silje.

These days of lunacy must have an end soon. I am leaving Yogya for Bandung with the night train. All over it, and I'm optimistic I had a great time. Borobudur was grand, and I've had some great nights hanging out with strange strangers photographing god knows what and having a great time. Today I went to Bantul, home of a huge earthquake some 19 months ago. 80% of the buildings were destroyed or damaged, and the reconstruction is still in progress. Rode through the jungle neighborhoods and saw people with sadness in their eyes and kept thinking about how weird a place this is, and I don't mean Indonesia in particular. Piles and piles of rocks and skinny roadside sheep with sparse dots of wool. On the way home, my driver put on Led Zeppelin and sang along to" Dazed and Confused" before going into "Communication Breakdown". This really is the land of surrealism, no wonder Salvador Dali is the favorite artist of any Yogya art student.

So I have moved on to Yogyakarta now, the epicentre of Javanese art and culture, but also the epicentre of hustling..I already bought overpriced batik art and got fucked (not literally) on the taxi. BUT it's all a big adventure. Surakarta was okay, not too much impressive sights, but nice people. Yogya is epic so far, went to the Prambanan temple complex today and looked around. Pretty grand. The ride on the back of a motorcycle to and back was not as grand, however brilliantly sketchy. Took photos of other maniacs on theirs bikes while riding and had great fun. Now I'm off to risk my stumach again. Good luck. Thank you.

I'm finding it hard to describe my days here on Java without any photos to help. Dingy, hot and smokey busride for 8 hours from Denpasar to Gilimanuk, ferry across the Bali Strait to Java and Banyuwangi. From Banyuwangi through the black fogged mountains to Jember, all in crazy speed and driving that would make Keanu Reeves a very distant second. Once in Jember, local hotel and more Nasi Goreng + drinking Warrung with some local heroes. Monggo! From Jember, more insane asylum bus to Probolinggo and on to the mountains of the Bromo region. Slept in the ice-cold hotel and walked through the inky night to the edge of the volcano, and watched the sun rise through the fog of heavy smoke erupting from it. Even epic isn't good enough to describe it. From the mountains I took even more bus, again through Probolinggo to Malang which is where I am sitting right now, listening to the chanting of the local Mosque and eating fried bananas/pisang goreng. Tonight I might go to the cinema and watch Kung-fu classics, before the 6 hour train ride to Surakarta tomorrow.

Just got back from Gili Trawangan with a 2,5 hour boat ride on too big waves. Not a very great plan after last nights escapades. Gili was interesting to say the least, a wild utopia on the borderline between a party island and a mountainpass in Afghanistan (I would think). The white beaches was unbelievable too. I shot 2 rolls of 120 film last night - ought to be surprising. Bali is the same still. I got to see the new Marlboro ad on the big screen, which was the best clip I have ever seen. Well worth the 1$ entrance fee! Still aiming at leaving the salesman mayhem of Kuta on monday, so that means first stop will be Gilimanuk. On the road!

Hey all. I am in Bali right now, taking some well deserved (?) time off. Its been a good week so far, and Ill stay for a while longer too before I head off for east Java. Ill be on the road in Java seeing something different and photographing until january 4th, then straight to Dhaka, Bangladesh for the summer school doing Photo Journalism until february 5th. Went to the Newport hotel a couple of weeks ago to check out Nix live, and got to check out Dead Letter Circus as well. Both did fantastic shows, and I got to shoot some photos. Haven't had the time to scan any negs since then, so finally:

I guess there's a couple more on the flickr for the die hard fans. Since last time, I've also had good company for a week from the Bali expats, Ellis and Eskil. They made life interesting, especially the magnificent trip to Lancelin in a rental 4x4. There's desert and beaches for 4x4 driving there, I need say no more. Hey everybody, my name is Retardo. I am spending Saturday night in front of my laptop, writing my final script for the semester. Next semester, remind me to start sooner (like that's gonna happen). I am trying to get as much stuff as possible done before my friends come for a week of hang-out next friday, going to be awesome. Tomorrow and Monday will continuing filming for the short film. We filmed the first scenes on Thursday, which went pretty good I think. The rest of the week will go to photo assignments and printing of the book. Who says students are lazy? Rumours has it my experimental short has been picked out for a TV-program we are gonna make at school. Pretty stoked, but that also means I have to be interviewed about my intentions of the film, which I might add is somewhat obscure and hard to explain without sounding pompous and/or pretentious. I'm fine with that though.

Ordered tickets today for my Asian escapade. Flying Perth-Singapore-Bali-Jakarta-Singapore-Dakha-Singapore-Perth..Couple of weeks in Bali visiting homeboy Ellis and Eskills in November and then tracking through Java for a month before heading to Bangladesh in the start of january and staying there until february 4th, then back to perth and spend 3 weeks with the parents around Australia before school starts back up. 15 weeks of traveling with my camera..Someone say vacation?

You have no idea how much I look forward to this. Really. I'm Not There will premiere sometime this fall. A bipoic of the life of Bob Dylan, 6 different actors representing 6 parts of his life. The photo above is Cate Blanchett portraying early career. Also, I'm looking seriously forward to Control, the film on the life of Ian Curtis. That one will come out in not too long either. Anton Corbijn is directing too, his first feature. Now all we (I) can do is wait.

Four by Four

The 4x4 Film Festival went down yesterday, lots of people showed up which was nice. Me & Øyvind's film got a nice 3rd or 4th out of 9 films, which I am happy with considering. The party at the girls' house after was also good, and I got to play harmonica all night, poor neighbours. Magne has a good update of it with lots of pictures over at his blog.

Last week was good at school to, got a couple assignments out of the way even. The picture above is from last weekend, nice hairdo! I also have made myself a flickr account this week, don't know how much I'm gonna use it tho.More Holgas to come..

Yep. Quite happy with it too, I never figured myself that good with stuff like that. I still, don't.

I have thought quite a lot about the difference between borrowing, stealing and homaging these days. So many contemporary film makers and photographers uses bits of others work. I guess that is inevitable, and cool as well if you bring something new to it. Is it okay, however, to be beyond influenced by other people works and use it without having their work stand for the same thing? Is it cool to rip of cool scenes from political films to make stylish films with no real content? I am confused. I got back a holgaroll today:

Wrapped up the principal filming for the horror short on friday night, some good stuff I am sure. Got the 5x4 until tuesday, so tomorrow I gotta get some stuff done, looking forward to do some photos again (besides photos of myself smoking cigarettes). Great party last night too, and finally got to see 300, which was beautiful. Tonight I am seeing the Turtles movie, which I have waited for for about 15 years now, haha. I'm off to do some walking now.

April Fools

Went to check out the South Fiesta Fashion display today, some interesting stuff for sure. I bought myself a tie with a pocket for lighter from U.F.O. Soda Gypsy. Perfect. Wrapped up the shoot for a horror I have been part of on Friday, and Wednesday we start shooting another one. My room is endless piles of books, negs, dvds and clothes. No good April Fools today, too bad. Tomorrow brings meetings, rehearsals and so on. 300 premiers on thursday, looking forward to that.
